Method of preparation of emulsion.

Generally, the preparation of emulsion can be done by two different methods

In small scale or laboratory scale

stage 1: preparation of primary emulsion by dry gum method or wet gum method. In such class of primary emulsion ratios for different kinds of oil considered.

  1. Dry gum method
  2. Wet gum method

Dry gum method:

  • Transfer accurately weighed quantities of gum into cleaned, dried mortar and triturate to get fine powder.
  • To this add slowly measured volume of oil through the walls of the mortar and mix well.
  • Then add measured volume of aqueous phase at once, at the center, start triturate vigarousely in one direction untill white creamy emulsion is formed.

Wet gum method:

  • Transfer accurately weighed quantities of gum into cleaned, dried mortar and triturate to get fine powder.
  • To this add slowly measured volume of aqueous phase and mix well.
  • Then add slowly measured volume of oil, after complete addition of oil start triturate vigarousely in one direction untill a thick white creamy emulsion id formed.

Stage 2: Dilution of primary emulsion:

  • Dissolve the additives prescribed in the preparation of vehicle before going to the dilution.
  • Gradually dilute the primary emulsion with small volume of vehicle, ensuring that each addition is fully incorporated before adding the next.
  • Transfer to a measure and completely risen the mortar with more vehicle.
  • Make up the volume, stirr well and allow to standing for about 10 minutes or dirt from the gum to sediment.
  • Decant carefully through a muslin stramer into a calibrated bollte.
  • Finally shake the container vigorously.

Industrial-scale

Emulsions are prepared by using specially designed equipment viz., colloidal mill, Kenwood mixer, Hand homogenizer, silver son mixer emulsifier.
